How to link TITMCDC with Science
**How to Link TITMCDC with Science: A Two-Eyed Seeing Approach** This course, using the concept of **"Two-Eyed Seeing" (Etuaptmumk)**, aims to bridge the knowledge of traditional Indigenous Taiwanese medicine, represented by **TITMCDC (Taiwan Indigenous Traditional Medicine and Cultural Database)**, with modern science. The principle of "Two-Eyed Seeing" encourages viewing the world through two perspectives: one eye sees through the lens of Indigenous wisdom, while the other views through the lens of Western scientific knowledge. By integrating both, learners gain a more holistic understanding of health and healing. ### Course Structure and Animation Overview The course includes **30 simple and engaging animation elements** to make the concepts more accessible. It divides traditional Indigenous medicine into two main aspects: 1. **Cultural Features** This section explores how Indigenous medicine reflects the cultural identity, beliefs, and rituals of Taiwan’s Indigenous peoples. The animations illustrate healing practices passed down through oral traditions, such as herbal ceremonies, spiritual rituals, and the role of shamans or community healers. These cultural elements demonstrate that Indigenous medicine is not just about treating physical ailments but also about restoring spiritual and communal well-being. 2. **Types and Usages of Traditional Medicine** This section focuses on the practical side of traditional medicine, such as identifying **plants, herbs, and minerals**, along with their medicinal purposes and application methods. The animations present common remedies used for conditions like colds, wounds, or stress, highlighting the detailed preparation processes. Some examples show the medicinal use of ingredients like mugwort or turmeric, while others explain how Indigenous knowledge aligns with scientific pharmacology. ### Linking Indigenous Knowledge and Science The course uses **interactive animations** to demonstrate the similarities and differences between traditional Indigenous medicine and modern scientific practices. For example, it compares how both systems understand plant-based healing, disease prevention, and treatment processes. The animations also highlight how modern science can validate or complement traditional practices—such as identifying active compounds in herbs—while still respecting the cultural significance of rituals and beliefs. By the end of the course, learners will understand that both Indigenous and scientific perspectives have value. "Two-Eyed Seeing" teaches that we can apply **science** without dismissing **Indigenous knowledge** and vice versa. This approach allows us to create a more inclusive, respectful, and effective healthcare system that incorporates the strengths of both worlds.
